This is the second half of the first book in The Twilight Saga. I am only going to be reviewing the graphic novel itself because I have already reviewed Twilight the novel, and the story line has not changed.
I love this new thing authors are starting to do, turning best selling novels into a graphic novel series. It is perfect to me because sometimes I really want to reread a book I love, but I don't want to invest the time when I already know how the story goes. Graphic novels are perfect because I can finish them in about an hour, and I get to relive the stories I fell in love with. The only issue I seem to have is I am a novel reader at heart so I forget to look at the pictures, and I have to constantly go back.
Twilight as we all know took the monsters we once knew as vampires, and turned them into these romantic, vegetarians, that glitter, and search for love. I think the graphic novel helped the story bring back a little of the darkness for its vampire characters. The part of the story introducing how Carlisle and the vampires came to be was drawn in dark bronzes, creating a darker mood while telling the story. For me as a reader this created a darker image in my mind, and I had never really noticed this darkness during the transformations when I read the story, because I was slightly blinded by all the love and glitter.
As for the storyline I think the graphic novel followed relatively close to the novel itself. It has honestly been so long since I read the Twilight Novels that I could not remember if half the stuff really happened in the story. I also noticed in a few parts the story jumps, I had to keep checking to make sure I did not skip any pages.
I love the art style in this graphic novel; it has a manga vibe going on, except the books flip from front to back. I would have really loved it if the entire novel was in color. The artist only really used color toward the end, and the color scenes were more aesthetically appealing to me as a reader.
Structurally the book is great, although it is a graphic novel it is still a hard cover. I mildly think this may just be for clever marketing reason to later release a paper back version. I am not usually one to compare but I have to in this case. I purchased a copy of Vampire Academy graphic novel, I read it once and then my husband read it and it began to fall apart. It was cheaply made, Twilight Graphic novel is not and I as a reader appreciate that. The cover is actually my favorite part of this graphic novel. If you hold volume one and volume two side by side it is Edward and Bella holding hands.
I still recommend this graphic novel to Twilight fans, and other readers. It is a great read for all ages, and it is also something great to add to your Twilight collection.
