Book Wh*re Online Book Club Week 1

Chapters 1-3

Hello everyone! Welcome to the first Book Whore Online Book Club discussions for Stealing Breath. If you want to ask any questions to other members please feel free to post your own questions with your answers. I look forward to a wonderful book club with everyone!

1) Introduce yourself to everyone and give us a nice goofy or interesting fact about yourself.

2) The first chapter started out with a bang. What did you think about this voice and "thing"?

 3) Have you read any books in the past that deal with Skinwalkers? Are you familiar with the term or is this new to you?

4) What are your thoughts on Evan?

  1. 1) Hey my name is Heather and this is my 3rd time around here at book club. A goofy fact about me is that, sometimes when I am reading a book and I come to part that is nail biting, drama filled, moving, or any other extreme emotion I tend to get up and pace in the room and do a little dance, because I just can’t stay still. I don’t think thats too goofy but my husband sure does, he just don’t understand that I am right there with the character(s)

    2) I think that the voice was targeted to her and not just whoever could hear it. whatever it wanted I think we will find out more later on.

3)I feel like I have heard about Skinwalkers, either in reading reviews or just blurbs but I have not read any books with them in it, until now.

4)Right place, Right time. Coincidence? I don’t know. But he seems to have some kind of connection to Sarah, maybe it has something to do with how she can sense how people are feeling?

  2. 1)My name is Hannah. A goofy fact about me is that when I'm reading, I get so into the book I can literally ignore everything in the room around me and that when I'm in that trance, I also read so fast that I literally skip over complete words. I've had to slow myself down and re-read entire paragraphs word for word cause I just want to jump ahead and feel like I may have missed something previously read.

2)I think the voice and thing targeted Sarah specifically. She is close with the aunt of the missing girl, who they fear the mother may have sacrificied, so I think they know that she carries around a "supernatural" power and want to use that.

3)I have not heard the term "Skinwalkers" although I have heard of astral projection, which is basically the same thing. However, I only heard of that on the TV series Charmed :) Never read any books about it.

4)My thoughts on Evan are that he holds some ability or connection with Sarah, as far as the sense of others goes. Like he too may have this similar gift, or something that will help her advance hers.

    1. Another fun fact!! Hannah and I have been friends since we were in highschool? Maybe I was middle school bound for highschool! Happy to have you joining in. I do the same thing when I read, I block out the entire world and that is one of the things I love most about reading, the escape.

  3. 1) My name is Danielle and I run a blog with a highly inappropriate name. Something about a whore! :)

    2) I thought the voice was definitely creepy and it makes me more intrigued to find out about the missing girl. The voice or thing because I am sure they are directly related is playing into the depths of Sarah to lure her out. I think.

    3) I want to say I read a book with a skinwalker of sorts. I think it was a ghost story the boy communicated with the dead and he would leave his body and take on a spirit form.

4)I was a bit concerned. I mean thing runs off intro Evan? Is he and the thing related, did he really just happen to be there? hm I have to know more.

  5. 1) Hi, I'm Cameron, Danielle's faithful assistant. :D Let's see, an interesting fact about me that I haven't shared yet (can't think of anything goofy at this time)...My mother named me after the main female character in a mystery series she was reading at the time when I was born. No idea what the series was called sadly (when I finally learned this, she couldn't remember which one it was). :)

    2) LOVED the first chapter! It instantly pulled me in and was the most intriguing part of this week's reading. I seriously wanted to know more. At first I thought the voice was actually that of the little girl and that Sarah was going to find her body in the house. Then I thought the spirit was connected to the child who had disappeared...a vengeful spirit of sorts. Then I started thinking that it was a spirit that was just out to mess with Sarah because it knew what she could do. I was all over the place thought wise with that first chapter.

    3) This isn't the first time I've heard the term Skinwalkers, though it is the first time I believe I've heard it describe the way it was in the book (I think my teacher preferred not to dwell on the darker side of the lore). I took a Native American studies class in college one semester and part of the curriculum involved folklore/traditional beliefs. It was a fascinating class. Bytheby, I must admit that the author did a good job researching the history of Skinwalkers...to learn a bit more check out this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin-walker

As for books that I've read with Skinwalkers in them: Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson touches upon Skinwalker lore, though Mercy is actually a Walker. I also read Karina Halle's Red Fox novel, in which the protagonists go up against two deadly skinwalkers. Plus there's Kelley Armstrong's Darkness Rising series. Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

    4) I've got mixed feelings on Evan. On the one hand I'd like to think he's just a great guy, who just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But on the other hand, there's something that I just don't trust about him at the moment. He's just a bit too nice and his being there was just too much of a coincidence.

    1. Hi Cameron,
Now I'm really curious about what book your name came from. Have you ever Googled popular books at the time you were born?

So happy to hear you loved the first chapter. This makes me feel like jumping up and down in a happy dance!

  7. Hello, everyone! I'm Joanne Brothwell, and I'm totally excited and nervous about this book club! So far, the comments have been very interesting to me, as I've never heard reactions about specific chapters before.

A goofy thing about me is my odd obsession with collecting creepy dolls. I started this collection as a little girl, and my love for my dollies hasn't waned at all!

Chapter one for me brings back memories of endless hours of rewrites. Nuff said.

Have I heard of Skinwalkers? Never before in books, but the idea for this novel came from a story I was told by a friend of mine, an Aboriginal Canadian. She had a little run-in with a Skinwalker - middle of the night, her car was shaking, there was laughing outside but nobody out there. So creepy! Then my creative juices started flowing!

About Evan? Of course I love him. He's my boy! I love him so much I've even drawn pictures of him (and Sarah) and tweeted then to the universe!

Thanks for choosing my book, Danielle. I can't wait for more book club!
